A Typical Operating System Roll Out Plan
(Network details have not been associated with the following example.)
User will have every level of functionality in the new environment as they had in the old with regard to production environment. (Not necessarily with OS).
User will have experience with or be scheduled for training within Windows environment.
Computer OS upgrade will be performed with the minimum of downtime to the user.
We will adhere to a standard environment wherever possible, filing deviation documents as appropriate.
Prior to Roll Out:
Identification of the business units or employees currently using 32-bit operating systems.
Are there positions still needing to be upgraded?
Are there interoperability problems currently happening in this environment?
What are the 32 to 16 bit software conflicts (for information sharing)?
Identification of business units needing to move to 32 bit operating system and business rationale for same. Rationale will likely determine which OS to use, based on the documents provided for decision support.
Identification of different data which business units need to be able to access. What data is shared data?
Prioritize business drivers into high, medium and low. Schedule groups according to rank.
Determine that the hardware is on the Hardware Compatibility List for the OS in question and that all peripherals will work in the new environment; upgrade hardware or detain as appropriate.
Determine that 16 bit apps and legacy software will work in the new environment, and find an equivalent if it won’t or an alternative solution. (Dual booting is a last resort, but doable).
Plan to roll out by functional group so that all areas work within the same framework.
Schedule appointment with user to be upgraded. Have user save bookmarks and bit maps. Locally loaded software will require reload in order to update the OS registry files
Plan for up to 1 hour orientation for each new user to identify tricks and snags. Make the user comfortable enough to allow support staff to comfortably walk away.
